upgrading uccnc software leaving previous profile ?

Hello

Would I be correct in assuming that it is better to leave the default profile when upgrading the software ? The recommended install says to overwrite the default profile, when I do this it overwrites my machine settings and I have to renter them! is this correct?

Yes, that's right.

I would welcome a simple "import profile, macros and screens" function and been asking for it a long time but it it seems that this is very low on the priority list, so manual action is required. Make sure you are not overwriting anything you don't have a backup of. It can be a real PITA if you are not careful. My strategy is not to upgrade unless necessary. Saves a lot of time.

Thanks for the reply. I figured as much, and your'e right it's a real pain having to renter the settings. I'm surprised that they recommend to overwrite the default profile seems illogical to me. By the way you don't happen to know if there is someway I can digitize objects (guitar necks) for example? I have a 3d probe but all the probing plugins seem to be for x y only. I would need something to output to an .stl file or similar.

We recommend to overwrite the profile file only because there might be new settings in new software versions which will load their default values if the keys are not defined in the old profile file.
This is not really an issue though in most cases since we always try to set a safe value for the keys in case they are missing from the profile.
Also the macros are overwritten if the checkbox to overwrite is ticked.

And the UCCNC overwrites only the default and the plasma profiles, if you have a custom named profile that is never overwritten.

Sorry, I have never digitized anything. The way I'd do is measure and make a drawing in a CAD software and start from there. I think that digitizing large objects takes far too much time and at least for me, it would be far more efficient to make a CAD drawing. Decorations might be more difficult, but for that, I'd use some bitmap images.

There is a guy in CNC Zone who has a thread about guitar making.

He has some interesting fixtures which might interest you. He documents his work flow very detailed, illustrated with very nice images. Perhaps you should look there and ask him for advise.

Create a new profile specific to your machine- it never gets overwritten
If you have the default set up correctly- when creating the new profile it will be the same as what you have running.
Then only run from the new profile ( worth adding a direct shortcut to this and use that to launch the program)
That way your new profile and macros are always available on upgrades
( I always install to the same folder so the same shortcut works)
I just upgraded to version 35. Up and running instantly with all same settings, macros etc.
