Maximum spindle speed

Postby bhdavis » Thu Feb 15, 2024 3:29 pm

Running a Perske 5hp spindle on a Delta VFD. I have the max. frequency on the Delta VFD set to it's listed max. of 400 mhz. I have the spindle setting in UCCNC also set to a max of 400 mhz. (and a minimum of 10).

I have no way of measuring the spindle RPM but it does sound, based on years of experience running routers, like it is probably going at my file speed setting of 18,000 rpm. However the rpm reading in UCCNC says 11,880 rpm. No matter what I enter as a faster speed, or if I raise the max output to 500 mhz in the UCCNC configuration (which of course if greater than the max set in the VFD) I will not read higher than 11,880, and of course the VFD readout stays at it's max of 400.

Slower spindle rpms will drop the UCCNC readout along with the VFD readout accordingly and the spindle will run slower.

So I'm wondering if the spindle is actually running at a max of 11,880 rpm and the UCCNC readout is correct, or if the spindle is actually running at my requested 18,000 rpm and the UCCNC readout is wrong.

Spindle configuration page screen shot attached.

Thanks for any input.

Which motion controller are you using and how is the VFD analog channel is connected to the motion controller?

Yes, I should have included that information.

CNC4PC UC300ETH WITH C76.

0-10v speed control.

Okay. Headway on diagnostics.

I bought a cheap non-contact tachometer. Cheap...........so accuracy is probably not dead on.

Spindle is a Perske VS60.11-2 360 hz 21,000 rpm

VFD is Delta VFD-A 3.7kw Set to 400 hz** ACM for common and AVI for 0 - 10v (**I think this should be set to 60 but the VFD will only set at 400hz)

UC300ETH control 0-10v connector (VFD AVI to 0-10v terminal and ACM on Common for same connector)

Here is a chart showing what I get at various rpm settings:

RPM ENTERED 0-10V READING AT VFD VFD HZ READOUT ACTUAL SPINDLE RPM UCCNC READOUT
5000 3.5 141 8434 5000
10,000 8.2 345 20470 10000
11500 9.75 400 23910 11500
11880 10.17 400 23917 11880
11881 and up 3.5 400 23917 11880

So it would appear I'm getting full rpm at the spindle but it isn't in sync with the UCCNC screen........either as the speed I enter or the readout.

Is it possible that I set the VFD connections incorrectly and I should be using the 0 - 10v+ terminal instead of the AVI terminal ?

Thanks,
BH

The PWM Frequency in UCCNC is not related to the VFD frequency, and has nothing to do with RPM. CNC4PC's instructions show it set to 300.

Do you have any pulley settings entered?

Okay. Thanks Gerry. I will change that to 300. It's been a few years since I set up UCCNC and don't remember why I set it to 400. Probably I missed that in the instructions and thought it related to the VFD setting.

I'm' not sure what you mean by pulleys unless it's related to pulley driven spindles. If that is the case then I do not have any pulleys involved as the Perske has a direct shaft out of the motor with the collet assembly at the bottom.

Thanks for helping. While not a critical issue it would be nice to get it sorted.

The chart got screwed up when posted. I'll try again.

RPM ENTERED.....0-10V READING AT VFD ......VFD HZ READOUT.......ACTUAL SPINDLE RPM.........UCCNC READOUT
5000.......................... 3.5 .......................... 141.......................... 8434 .......................... 5000
10,000 ..................... 8.2 ............................ 345.......................... 20470.......................... 10000
11500 ...................... 9.75............................ 400 .......................... 23910.......................... 11500
11880.................... 10.17 ............................ 400 .......................... 23917.......................... 11880
11881 and up............. 3.5............................. 400.......................... 23917.......................... 11880

There's a "Spindle Pulley" button next to the max rpm setting. But I don't think it's that.
Do you have any spindle or VFD plugins running? I seem to recall seeing a similar issue when using the Huanyang plugin, if the settings were incorrect.

If you type S15000 in the MDI, it will still show 11880?

Gerry,

Yes, anything typed in above 11880 still reads 11880 and the VFD readout remains at 400.

S15000 reads 11880
S18000 reads 11880 etc etc etc.

Also there are no spindle plugins running that I've set up and I don't know of any that initiate by default.

Monday I'm going to call Delta tech and ask why the VFD isn't taking any frequency setting other that 400. Like I think everywhere in the US my supply is 60 cycle and I'm pretty sure that's what that setting is supposed to be for. Perhaps that's the problem. Or perhaps I don't know what I'm talking about.......chuckle.

Thanks,
BH

What you are seeing in UCCNC has nothing to do with the VFD. You have a setting wrong somewhere in UCCNC. Is the spindle override at 100%?
