Well if I could approach a parking space at 40 mph knowing that the system would slow me down and stop before I hit anything I would deem that to be much more efficient than me processing the info and slowing down accordingly. I would approach at 5 MPH or less and even then I would have to adjust my speed up and down.

But why choose a method that requires more focus and concentration, when there is an easier more automated way.

Well I trust UCCNC to throw my Bridgeport table around at 160 IPM so I guess I'll trust it's soft limits as well:)

You and Balazs must get along great. I don't think he uses soft limits either.

That's an interesting one Terry.

If I have a simple cut (plasma) and I can't be arsed, I don't bother homing. However, normally I do home, mainly for recovering cut position precisely, after say a limit switch tripped and I've lost position.

Provided I recorded my work zero offset from absolute co-ordinates, I can recover my lost position exactly.

As for my hard stops I could drag my table with them :D

I have been working with high tech, safety critical gear almost all my adult life, work within aviation, have a pilot license, fly planes with auto pilot never hesitate to engage the AP if appropriate, and learned one thing during my 40 years of work experience... human fail more often than machines...

As for my car, I trust it today, while initially when I bought the car I was a bit skeptical also, and I still have just a light control setting for the Y axis (left/right movements) lane keeping function. "Light" means it will pull the steering wheel lightly back and gives me an optical information with a picture in case it believes I am mistakenly changing lane or about to drive off the road, similar to the stick shaker in a plane. There is no doubt in my mind that the car stops if the truck in front of me suddenly stops, the likelihood of me missing the truck or keeping too close distance to stop is much higher than failure of the feature without previous warning. Of course, there are settings for the distance keeping function, which is adapted to the speed and you can't really set distances below any reasonable distance. I also get warnings when some or all the sensors are faulty (never happened), or dirty (happens now and then), and some or all the safety features are disengaged when that happens, like for example a misty winter morning with frost or road dirt/mud end up on the sensors.

Of course, I would not like to sleep when I am driving, but I actually have a work mate who fainted while driving on a highway with traffic and normal highway speed (110kmh in Sweden). His car stopped after a normal deceleration at the side of the road on it's own, when he woke up he realized what happened. His wife actually wrote a letter to Tesla and expressed her gratitude, the feelings she had since he (and maybe others) actually survived because of the built in safety function of the car.

But this is a CNC forum, so this was just a small OT about safety and automation. Automation works and is definitely more trust able, making less mistakes than human.
