Yet another probing question

Postby darrenm36 » Tue Mar 21, 2023 3:05 am

OK So I've been through the forum and can't figure this one out, it feels like I'm missing something simple

I'm on teh latest version, will check teh actual version number when I go to the workshop later to confirm.
When performing a tool probe (via the probe screen) for a mobile probe everything works, except it doesn't update the offset on the offsets page.

So click reference workpiece, (workpiece is zero on z axis) it goes and probes on the tool setter and the probe screen shows an offset (-1.6)
Go to the offsets page and tool offset is 0

Change the endmill length, click probe, it goes uses the toolsetter, and returns to the work piece, to z0, but thats the same z (in machine coords) as prior to probing (shortened the endmill, so it stops above the workpiece). so Z not updated.
Probe screen now shows an offset of -0.5. Goto the offsets page, tool offset is still 0.

So probing is determining the offset, but its not writing it to the tool offset on the offsets page, and thus not updating z.
Just to check I've done M6T1 and G43H1, to ensure everything aligns

It feels like I'm missing a tickbox or button or something to save the offset to z. but can't see anything

Ideas? Or what info do you need to debug this?

The Z offset should be changing, not the tool offset or machine coordinates.

OK I'll need to go out to the workshop tomorrow to check that, I figured the tool offset value on the offsets page would have changed. Checking if the z offset change is easy, I have a reproducable test.
To be clear, I should see this on the offsets page correct? In work offset? or G52 offset?

What I see is on the probe page after a mobile probe the difference in height between the workpiece zero and the tool setter probe. This shows in the probe field in the axis1 row.
if I change the tool (or its length) then a new mobile probe shows a differnt probe value, as you would expect.
I haven't seen this value written/saved anywhere else, should I see it on the offsets page (I will check this, just looking for what I should see)
And my z 0 position isn't changing when I tell the machine to goto z0

yes, Z work offset.

On the Offsets page the work offset has to change. The tool Z offset comes from the tool table when you apply G43 H<tool>. On the probe screen you have to turn on Zero probed axes to zero the probed axis (Z).

Thanks guys for the quick response.
One step closer and it was simple. I didn't have zero axis on, I was mistaken in thinking it would re-zero to the tool setter instead of workheight

So with zero axis on the z work offset is changing and this is changing the z value correctly.

However I've then encountered another issue.
After probing the machine returns to the workpiece, as expected, but it returns to the original z position, not the new z position.
So if it started a z0 and I shortened the endmill, it returns to the same physical position, which is now z=8, which means my endmill is above the workpiece (big issue if I lengthened the endmill as it would be below the workpiece and have crashed)

So to be clear an example
- endmill is 20mm long
- zeroed at workpiece (work z=0, machine coords =-40)
- change endmill to 10mm long
- perform mobile probe
- after probe machine returns to workpiece
- z=-10 (machine coords=-40) endmll is 10mm above the workpiece
- perform z=0. machine moves endmill to the correct height.

So after probing, when it returns to the workpiece how do I get it to return to z=0 instead of the old position?

You wrote that you have the latest version of UCCNC. At the moment there are 3 of them, so what is the exact version that you use?

If you use the Reference current as workpiece function then it has a bug, that's why the tool goes back to bad position. I've already fixed this bug, you can download from here.

It would have been good if this bug was fixed and a new version number of uccnc created. It has caused lots of issues with people downloading the wrong version of V2.1115 .
It has also been a Loooooong since any updates - especially the bug from using tool compensation .

How about a interum release rather than waiting for the lathe stuff to be sorted.

Thanks dezsoe,

So version of uccnc is1.2115
probing plugin was 1.3.4.0
and you new one shows as 1.3.4.2 beta on the plugins screen (I may have the 3 & 4 backwards I'm going from memory, should have taken a photo)

This has made no change to the behavior
Same test, machine returns to the same position with endmill at wrong height and a z value that is not 0 that reflects the wrong height. If i then do a z0 command the endmill moves to the correct height (the workpiece)

Is there something I can run to capture a debug of what is happening for you?

Here is how to create a log file. Please, turn it on and do all that you used to and upload the log file.
