Some question on my stepper motor

Postby shishenkou » Wed Nov 23, 2022 7:51 am

First post and wish i had found this forum a few months ago

They say stepper motor suppliers love newbies

I have a Warco wm18 mill and have added a power z axis stepper but it stalls at high speed

This is the driver i am using - https://www.oyostepper.com/goods-111-Di ... Motor.html

This is the stepper motor - https://www.oyostepper.com/goods-493-Ne ... uder-.html

This is the power supply - https://www.oyostepper.com/goods-914-Me ... upply.html

I have set the driver to 4.2a and i think, can't remember without opening enclosure, to 1600 steps/rev

It works quite well but tends to stall at max speed especially raising the head. For info the head does have a gas strut helper

so where have i gone wrong?

Most people use at least a nema24 566oz stepper with a 48v power supply. You also need a stepper with less than 3mh inductance.
The stepper and psu are too small afaic.

I made the mistake of getting a 1100oz!. I've managed to compensate that by using a DM860T driver and 80vdc power. I can now hit 3700mm/min. It used to stall at 2000.

Power supply. https://m.aliexpress.com/item/4000232197793.html?
80vdc, 800w.

Stepper driver.

Stepper motor.

With this stepper and driver running together on 80vdc your Z axis should fly!!!!.

Then you can update your x, y, with more of the same drivers connected to your 80v psu, and use these steppers:

Nema23/24 motors will have no trouble on these drives at that voltage.
My PM25 mill uses the same.

I've posted some links for a decent, driver, stepper, psu, setup for you to look at.
