G2 command with rotary axes

Postby geroswen » Sat Oct 22, 2022 12:49 am

Hello,

I have a CNC welding machine and used to run this command in Mach3:

G2 F500 X0 Y0 I-52.8 J0 A360

I goes around the circle and welding torch turns at the same time. It does linear motion on the A axis, so 45 degrees tilted torch is always perpendicular to the workpiece.

Haas supports such command as well.

Is there any way around this, please?

G2 will not move the A axis, only the two axes on the selected plane. (Usually X-Y.) However, you can set the A axis to tangential knife mode which follows the path of the X-Y axes. See the manual for details.

Thank you for info about "tangential knife mode". I managed to get it to work for the command that I mentioned, but would be very tricky (if not impossible) to use for other welds. I'm only able to rotate A axis from 0 to 360 degrees and after that I have to go back because of the regular welding torch cable.

I made a workaround by swaping Z and A axes. That way I'm able to do this:

G2 F500 X0 Y0 I-52.8 J0 Z360

instead of this:

G2 F500 X0 Y0 I-52.8 J0 A360

But still it's a dirty workaround / trade off and I would expect UCCNC to support G2 command in the same way as Mach3 or Haas.
