The way I think about it, is that my tool numbers are actually the slot numbers.
In CAM I have more tools with a same tool number, and I change the tools in slots manually depending on job.
After a while I develop a system where I position certain type of tool on certain slot position. For example, I put ball nose tool on slot number 3 every time. Negative flat end on number 1, and positive on number 2. Number 6 is job specific tool like chamfering bit, or key hole bit.
But, if you are using some kind of 180 degree ATC arm system with catalogue, I understand why you need it. You can access or change those columns in table by writing the value to appropriate number / row in profile (.pro).
For these columns it is:
Slot0=0
Description0=
Type0=
Material0=
So you can modify your M6 macro in certain way, so it can save actual position each time it is executed. It is actually a swap then. The slot of a newtool will be transferred to slot of an old tool. At the begining of the macro, you have to find, where is your newtool slotted.
If you need help with it, ask. Seems like something I can use in feature.
