This VFD yes?.

I'll have a look at it. May be fine without a relay but I personally would always use one (or an optocoupler module) for vfd or servo drive.

This VFD seems that it does not have a separeate analog and digital GND which is not really good, because then you have to connect the 5V0 and 24V0 together to make it work.
That is a good oversight!.
Could he try this workaround below?.
Use the non isolated outputs for switching instead.
Port1-output# to FWD and the 5VO from port1 going to GND.
Then you have 2* 5VO on shared vfd GND rather than having a 5v and a 24v?.
This is why I always suggest using a relay for switching fwd!!!!!.
Relay:
24v+ to RL+, output# to RL-.
VFD fwd to RL/NC, VFD gnd to RL/com.
(ssr are usually marked something like pin 1+&2- instead of nc/com)
Fwd+,1/gnd-,2
That solves the whole problem.
You can get a simple DC ssr relay from amazon for cheap.
Or get a cheap 2 pin switch between fwd/gnd and switch it manual.
Relay looks like this:

You will have to change a few parameters on the vfd first don't forget.
Max freq, to not overrun the rpm.
Min freq, to prevent creeping at 0v analog.
Control style being ued.
Etc.
5-200v Relay will be fine. As long as the voltage range being used is covered by its spec. In your case 12v/24v is covered both sides.
