Probe Screen improvement

Postby BigAl » Tue Jun 16, 2020 9:30 am

Hi,

the probe screen is (for me) now nearly perfect. A few things could be adjusted to make it - imho - better:

1. The "separate settings per mode" are absolute great. But I need different "traverse speed limits" per mode. I have two types of sensors. Tool length measurement, and (expensive) 3D-sensors. In tool length measurement I need full speed because my fixed probe is on the far end of the table. For all other measurements I need limited speed to protect my 3D-sensor. How can I solve that? The blower (which I do not need) has such an option "Tool Probe / All Probes"...

2. As long I'm in the probe screen some functions should be disabled. I'm afraid to press "Start" or "Spindle On" while a probe is mounted. Especially in the new screen set this is very dangerous. The start button and the probe button are located very close together. Accidentally pressing start while the 2D-Probe is mounted is not a good idea...

3. In page 1 of the probe screen (Probe Tools) only the relevant buttons should be visible. When I'm e.g. in "Touch Probe" the reference buttons etc. should not be shown because they have no relevance. When I'm in "Mobile Probe" the "Set fixed probe pos" is not relevant and so on... This can be very confusing. The labels on that buttons are tiny and on small screens sometimes hard to identify...

Please understand this just as "improvements" and not as bugs. The probe screen is a very useful and powerful tool for me.

Hi Alex,

I put 1. and 3. on my list to think of, good ideas. The 2. cannot be done: I cannot disable some of the buttons, just all buttons on the screen.

Hi dezsoe,

thank you for your answer. About the second point I solved this by moving the "critical" buttons to other places of the screen. That works for now but it is all the time a pain in the ass when a new release of UCCNC is published. All my changes must be transferred to the new release. Until now I add all my changes manually to every new version and that costs me all the times an evening. This is the reason while I'm searching for "final solutions". I wish there could be an update process for new releases where the user changes could be migrated to the new version. Until now I didn't find a description how to move to a new version...

Hi Alex,

You can make a copy of the .ssf file and then you can edit and use that screenset. The update will only change the stock files, not yours. If you make one more copy of the original screenset (which you don't edit) then after update you can compare the screensets to find what changed and decide how to go on.

Hi sezsoe,

thank you for that information. I will try that for the future. There are always so many things I have to take care about. Especially my screens are getting more and more customized. I'm in the progress of changing my controllers from UC100 to UC400ETH (need more inputs :-)) and therefore I have once customizing my screens. But now I can do it more "finally" when your suggested workflow works.

Keep continue developing this great software! Maybe the screen editor could be received some improvements like "align functions" or "multi select"... But this is "whine at high level" as we say in Germany :-)

I agree, this would be a very good feature, regardless which sort of probing you are doing. Starting the spindle by accident may cost a finger or your hand, or at the worst case, your life.

My solution is a hardware switch which I flip to OFF every time I start probing. It provides 100% safety, even if there would be a bug in the software. You should never trust ANY software in DIY machines when it is about your life. The disadvantage of that switch is that I have remember to flip it ON before starting the g-code and the milling, otherwise things might brake... which have happened once or twice the last couple of years... but never the less, it's making my life VERY safe when I have my hands inside the work area. :D

I agree point #2 is a biggie and I hope some better solution can be implemented (I'm afraid it won't be coming from me, that's out of my league). This actually happened to me with a wired 3d probe--hit the start button accidentally and suddenly I had a ripped off wire that slung into my work light. I was able to fix the wiring and the light was a minor loss, but it could have been much worse.

Safety wise, the software switch is NOT OK at all. Relying on a software preventing the start of the spindle is NOT safe. You should have a mechanical switch to prevent that from happening when you have your hands around the spindle. That way, even if you accidentally hit the START the spindle won't start, even if G-code movements would start. It could still cause injury, but considerably less severe than with the spindle running.
