Struggling with motor tuning

Postby Vance » Tue Mar 03, 2020 8:24 pm

Is there a guide or utility to help set up motors? I am not clear on the nuanced axis settings and how they interrelate.

I have tried the suggestions I have found on cnczone but the motors don't move too fast and most actions seem to stall the steppers.

I can get them to appear to move smoothly and with a reasonable speed however I've also noticed that when I shut down UCCNC one day, the settings seem to change upon power up. I know how to save/apply. but the motors sound slower.

If there is a tuning tab on UCCNC, I have missed it. My machine profile is in the signature.

There are really just two settings, Acceleration, and Velocity. You usually want to set them to about 25% below the point where the motors stall.

This is done with trial and error. Set the acceleration to a low value (5 in/sec/sec, or 125mm/sec/sec), and then increase the velocity, testing with each increase until the motors stall. Then reduce the velocity by 25%.
Then start increasing acceleration until it stalls, and then back it off 25%.

Every machine is different, so you can only learn the values to use by testing.

The values should never change when you close UCCNC. Perhaps you are starting a different profile?

Gerry

Is the keyboard jog key the correct procedure or should I use some gcode in the MDI?

I ended up using g00. Worked well.

Thank you very much!
