Two DG4S-16035 in parallel for double current?

Postby Blaise » Wed Oct 10, 2018 3:53 am

Hi all.

I have large brushed DC servo motors that require more than 36 Amps. Could I use two DG4S-16035 - DC servo drive in parallel to drive one motor and have double the current output?

Thanks!

No, you can't parallel servo drives.
If your servo motor requires more current then it will run with limited torque because of the lower current limit.
It is also adviced not to go below about 50% of the rated current of the motor with the current rating of the drive, because then the current will be so short for the motor that the control loop can become very lazy and can even become untunable. And also take the DG4S ratings into account, the minimum allowed motor coil resistance and inductance, you should not go below the datasheet posted values.
However you should also check if the current rating of the motor is the continous rating or the peak.

I think there will be no problem with the 2 smaller ones. The largest servo is on the edge what could cause issues, because the peak current rating is a bit over 2 times what the drive can handle, so it is possible that the loop will be unsetable or the axis might be able to only slowly accelerate which can be a problem if it is not a hobby machine where time for the jobs count.

These servos will be used in a diy CNC for my home shop. I guess I'll just have to keep it slow. Thank you for taking the time and answering my questions. If you ever make a larger size drive, I would be a happy beta tester! ;)
