I am brand new to cnc so please be gentle. I am in the process of building a cnc router machine for hobby use. The mechanics are not a problem but I am looking ahead at the electronics and have questions. I like the uccnc software and the uc400 eth. Does the 400 go to a breakout board? What kind of breakout? Recommended stepper drivers for NEMA 23 steppers? Any help (besides psychiatric) on the electronics setup would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you need a breakout board (or two). There is a huge variety of breakout boards available, with a huge range of features, at various prices.
A lot of people are using these cheap ones.

I like Leadshine AM882 drives from Ebay, which are good drives, at a good price. Leadshine won't support them, though, as they are not intended for sale outside China.
A lot of people like these low cost drives.

With Nema 23's, a lot of people like Leadshine MX4660, or Gecko G540 drives, which are 4 drives in one package, with integrated breakout board. So with these, you don't need a breakout board.
