Live adjustments of Z axis whilst cutting

Hi, I sometimes use my plasma table to flame cut thicker plate using oxy-fuel.

I'd like to know if there is a way to control the Z axis up and down to finely adjust height whilst oxy-fuel cutting. Is this possible? I know you can use a capacitive height sensor but I only do flame cutting rarely.

would like some ideas, thanks in advance

What about using a freely moving Z axis and a mechanical plate to follow the plate height?

Yes good idea something like a floating head but with a wheel that rolls on the plate that maintains a fixed height? I was hoping I could just use my current z axis and make adjustments on the fly. Maybe the thc up/down inputs can be wired to buttons??? Or if there is a way I can do it in UCCNC that would be awesome

With a macroloop you can check the sensor input and make a small movement (eg. 0.05mm) every 100ms.
Then you are going to need a toggle button, like the soft limits one, to enable and disable the macro, and a couple of macros to switch the button on and off in the gcode.
