Oddball MDI Issue

I’ve recently set up my Boxford 190 VMC using the calibration setting on the axis and have been using a DTI to verify this.
When using the calibration commands to move the axis’ +/- it works very well.
I apply and save the settings.
When in the MDI I have some really odd things happening. For example X +1 randomly gives a real life output of much larger.
Sometimes nothing happens at all. Other times the axis moves in the opposite direction! So confused!
I thought this might be “noise” but surely it wouldn’t work in the calibration menu if so?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
