Cannot comprehend v2.108+ probe screen use

I had been running A_Camera's probe screen with some success, but thought I'd roll over to the "new 2.108" codebase (actually running 2.113, as it seems to have more support for my AXBB-E controller).
I'm trying to do a simple 2-pass probe for the Z axis. I have the Gage Height set, Fine Distance, Retract, Fast Feed, and Fine Feed. I also have Enable Retract enabled. I have attempted with Safe Probe Mode both enabled and disabled.
I have the P1 value set to a distance greater than the probing distance.
After clicking on Start Probing, the Z axis moves down, the probe triggers/axis stops, then I get the status message "Probe input is active, cannot probe!"
I have had _some_ success with "Single Probe Mode" (probing completes but does not retract after probing) and even then, the Gage Height value is not placed into the Z axis DRO.
ANY help would be appreciated. Sure would be GREAT if someone who understand this screen's behavior would do a YouTube on it! Short of that, I'm open to any and all help, thanks in advance!
