Removeable Rotary 4th Axis position calibration

Postby mark68 » Sat Feb 24, 2024 10:42 am

I have a rotary 4th Axis which will be placed on the top of the machine bed when required to be used then removed when not in use. It will sit on top of a slave board which sits on the vacuum table and it is clamped down at either end. Postioning of this will not be very accurate as their are no datums other than a couple of pencil marks to line up the base of the rotary table.

Therfore is there probe functionality to touch off a pin mounted in the spindle chuck and also in the tailstock which i can then probe both the headstock and tailsock when it is at maxium open position, I believe it will need to touch both sides of the pin and the top so that it records Z centre and places any angle or height deviation as the new XYZ zero coordinates.

mark68,

ProbeIt plugin offers some rotary probing features, including point cloud probing, and some basic probing tasks into DXF. There is also a 'probe to find center' feature which is sort of like what you're are requesting.

ProbeIt is meant more as a 'reverse engineering' tool, for probing and collecting surface and edge data to DXF and point clouds. However, it may provide what you're looking for in easier rotary setup to coordinates. There is no reason you can't use the basic probing available in UCCNC to align and probe either though, you'd just have to work the manual steps.

These vids may give some insight into what is available from ProbeIt:

ps, this isn't meant to be an advertisement, but just an answer to your request :)

Eric

Thank you Eric, it's a shame that Cnc drive hardly ever reply to these questions and offer advice and support. I appreciate the links which I'll take a look at, I would have thought it would have been possible with the built in probing tools, maybe with some macro editing, I'm not sure hence the question.
