Number of steps for servo tuning routine

I am in the process of tuning a DG4s-16035 drive connected to an old large Getty's/ Fanuc Black cap type 10 servo for Z axis on My lathe I am converting. When using the servo configurator tool for tuning the drives it asks for number of steps to use while tweaking the parameters. Due to the gearing, inertia max speeds and such I'm sure one number for all situations does not work. To small, the axis will not make it up to rapid velocity rates. Any suggestion on how to target an optimum step number for this tuning tool? Just thinking Myself the only way I could see to do this was get an oscilloscope monitoring the encoder to see at how many steps was the axis able to achieve the max velocity You plan to use with the machine. Am I over thinking this?
Control Mach 4 / Lathe profile
Motion DSPMC Ethernet

Thanks in advance,
BK

Hi, my advice is to use 1-2 motor turns when doing the 1(t) step analysation.
You can also monitor the servo position error continously on the error view page of the Servoconfig3 software.
