Breakout board-Start relay-Interface cable???

Postby The-Meerkat » Mon Jun 29, 2020 2:19 am

I’m still retrofitting my plasma table with new UCCNC equipment. Of course I saved the things I understand least for last.

Im trying to connect a UCBB breakout board to my powermax 65 machine interface cable’s “start plasma” wires. I also have this new Salon D-121 relay module that goes between the two. I can’t figure it out. It’s nothing like my old gecko540 and crappy automotive relay in the old setup. I’m over my head. I’ve got the 12v +/- wires connected from the power supply to the VCC/GRD pins on the relay. That’s it. I’m drawing a blank on rest. There is a green wire and black wire from the interface cable that need to connect to the relay but I’m not sure where they go. Also, I need a wire from breakout board output 1 to the relay. I’m confused on that. In my mind there should probably be a second wire from the breakout board connecting to the relay too, but like I said, I’m confused.

Also, with the new software, once it’s wired properly, how do I dry test it without actually firing it up. Can somebody make sense of this hole mess for me?

All the best,

Scott Meer

Check point 5.1.1. of the UCBB manual, there is a nice drawing about how to drive a relay with the UCBB outputs.
There is one wire out of the breakout board to the relay, because it is an NPN output.
That wire goes to the negative of the relay coil. The positive relay coil connects to the positive Voltage +12V, +24V or whatever Voltage you use.
So, when the UCBB output NPN transistor turns on then current will flow from the positve side of the power supply to the relay coil+ through the coil through the negative side of the relay coil to the UCBB output transistor's collector through the transistor and from the transistor emitter (on the PCB) to the ground (0V) of the power supply. And so your relay turns on.
If the output transistor is off then there is no current flow through the relay coil, so the relay is off.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! It works! I had the added complexity of multiple power supplies that needed to be connected together via the common () terminals. Once I read your instructions and re-read the section in the manual, it started making sense.
