Is Xbox360 plugin compatible with any controller?

Do i need an XBox controller gamepad to use the plugin or any controller can be used?

I have a cheap gamepad, the plugin says "gamepad connected" but i have no response on the keys.

Is there something else to be done or it is useless?

tha hard way i found out it is not...
