UB1 Breakout Board - how to connect the periphery

Postby Maddin » Fri Dec 08, 2017 4:47 pm

Hello everybody,
I recently bought the UB1 and I'm currently busy with the wiring.
I have a Z-axis with a brake: how do I connect it (my old TripleBeast has a separate connector for this)? :(
Regrads,
Martin

What do you use the brake for?

The only brakes I've seen (and my experiance is limited) are for those stepper motors that could drop when power is not applied to the drive

used with something like this type of arrangement:

I would wire it fail safe via the enable pin, so that when the drive is active, the relay drops the power supply out to the brake, and when the power drops out, the e-stop is active the relay disengages and power is restored to the brake.

{i.e. wire via a normally closed relay}

You may need to provide some photos or a bit of a better description if this is not what you're looking for.

If the brake is to hold the axis when the power goes off, so e.g. the Z-axis will not roll off to the table then you could connect it e.g. on a relay on an enable output from the UCCNC or on the charge pump signal,
so the brake releases when the UCCNC runs or when is not in reset, depending on if you will use an enable or charge pump and how you configuring it.

That's how I have my Z axis on my mill. works perfectly.

Yes, my brake is to hold the Z-axis when the power goes off: http://spanish.jingbomotor.com/photo/pl12694885-nema_23_nema_34_nema_42_stepper_motor_with_brake.jpg!
I think this is the solution for my problem (a relay on an enable output from the UCCNC or on the charge pump). I will follow your advice, thanks a lot! :)
