Work computer at the same time

Postby jjude » Thu Dec 05, 2024 2:04 pm

Can I use the computer for other work at the same time as I am milling?

I do it all the time. I use my UCCNC control as a work station basically. Run Fusion on it, answer emails, play music, and run my machine. All at the same time.

I say that it depends... I had issues a long time ago when I used UC300 USB, but going to ETH solved 99% of the issues. Make sure that the port you are using is not going to sleep. In fact, make sure the PC is not going to sleep and you should be fine, even if I prefer not to do too many things in parallel.

I also do it often. With a very modest spec computer.

Running UC400ETH via ethernet.

Generally working on my CAM program getting the next toolpath ready.

Never had a glitch.

When people say "I do it all the time..." I wonder what they are doing? I mean, light extra use, like surfing the net, reading writing mail, CAD... all that is light work and is of course no problem. But right now, I am running Adobe Premiere Elements 2024 and creating a 4k video with many clips and effects and that is a real hog. It will take another 40 minutes or one hour before it is ready... My heavy duty PC with a lot of RAM, SSD and HD is really fighting even with surfing the net, so I wouldn't open UCCNC in anything other than demo mode. Would definitely not start milling or turning with it anything else except perhaps some really simple parts.

It should be obvious that if you are doing tasks that are too resource intensive you should prioritize your resource use.

My control is a Dell with 16gb ram and a 500gb SSD. I have no idea what processor it has. It is by no means a super computer, it wasn't even good when I bought it 4 years ago. It runs Fusion, UCCNC, a media player, many browser tabs, Excel, and Word, and two touch screen monitors without sweating. I performed an update on it recently and out of curiosity I checked uptime and it was over 100 days.

That is good enough for me, and probably the vast majority too.

It is obvious for me, but not for everyone. That's why I clarified the statements. It is also not obvious for everyone how to check if something is a resource hog or not and how to fix or solve or change priorities... Anyway, this is not a computer forum for engineers, so I don't expect anything to be obvious for anyone.

That's easy to check. Right click on "My computer" click on "Properties" and you will see everything there is to know about your computer.
