Units/steps setup

I am in the process of setting up and tuning my CNC and I’ve run into a problem I don’t know how to solve.

I went through the axis setup and and used the calculator to figure out my units per step by measuring how far the bit moved and UCCNC calculated the units per step for me.

If I now jog the axis and compare the distance shown on the DRO to the actual movement everything matches. Once I load a g-code file created in Aspire, however, moving my DRO indicated position 10” only moves the cursor in the preview a couple of pixels. I did not realize the mismatch the first time and what should have been a z movement of 0.25” ran the bit straight into the waist board as far as it would go.

Essentially, the movement of my machine does not match up to the distance I expect from my tool path in Aspire.

Any ideas?

do you know what your XYZ axis steps per unit should be??

You probably want to start by checking out the input and output pins and ports are wired correctly

Next you probable want to consider your axis steps per unit.

The X, Y, Z and A axis , all are listed as 6137.67 steps per unit (inch?)

I am not sure how you are driving these axis (ball screws, rack, pinion, threaded rod, belt.... etc).

But, your clearpath steppers require 6400 steps per revolution, and if 6137.67 steps = 1 inch of movement, that would mean that 1 revolution of motor movement equals ~1.0427 inch of machine movement.... (~26.49mm)

I always recommend that you try to understand your machine and work out it's motion as best as you can ...

say you have a ball screw, with a 5mm pitch (~0.198" pitch or 5.08 turns per inch), at 6400 steps per revolution, your machine is going to be looking for 32512 steps per unit (inch) if direct driven.... if you have belt drives or gearboxes etc to increase torque then that would add to that number by the ratio...

What is your X,Y,Z and A axis drive mechanism.... what is its pitch..... does it have intermediate belt drives or gearboxes and what are their ratio?

I did some tests and I think it was software related on the g-code side. I am using Aspire and used the UCCNC postprocessor and I think it generated millimeter G-Code. I switched the postprocessor to Mach 3 (inch) and now it's cutting fine.
