Probing always has an endpoint. For example G31 Z-100 means to do probing until the probe contacts or the Z reaches the coordinate -100.
So, the direction of probing depends on your current point and the programmed probe endpoint.
For example if your current point is Z=0 and you probe G31 Z-100 then the Z axis will move to the negative direction, because it moves from 0 towards -100.
But if your current point is Z=-200 and you probe G31 Z-100 then the Z axis will move to the positive direction, because it moves from -200 towards -100.

I made all moves in my probing routine incremental (g91) instead of absolute (g90)
This ensured I was always moving the direction I wanted.
Before this I was getting errors in movement direction from presumed direction.
( read as I was not seeing exactly what I had thought I’d programmed it to do)

Hi all,

thanks for your quick reply. Basically I use the woodworker 2017 macros.
Interestingly the probing movement is not the issue. Fast probing is working. The re-track is the issue.
So fast probing works - Hits the workpcs and gets the hitted point, want to retrack for slow probing and this retrack moving is in wrong direction.
Interestingly it was always working and now, not anymore. I modified other macros and the profile file...
Very surprising.

Probably you are off position comapred to where you were previously.
Did you try to home the machine?

Check the Clearance Plane setting, and make sure it's higher than your plate thickness.

Hi all,

thanks again for your replies. I tried out everything but unfortunatly I have not solved the issue.
Probing works always in the right direction. The retract moves the wrong way into the workpiece .
Affected are x and y, I ave not tested z
Any new idea?

Check what code makes the retract movement. It is sure pointing to the wrong direction.

What version of the screenset are you using? There was a bug (s) in earlier versions that could cause what you are seeing, especially for metric users. You should be using version 1.11c
Please post a screenshot of the probing screen, so I can see your settings.

Just an FYI - I've had a similar (but not identical) with probing using the 2017 screenset. UCCNC v1.2101 & 2017 screenset v1.011

What happens is that during the Auto Zero function the Z-axis will rapid the spindle probe down rather than retracting to the clearance plane. The unintended move happens after the 2nd probe touch; there is a slight delay while the macro calcs are done and DRO is zeroed and then the Z-axis plunges down at rapid speed.

All functions are normal until after the 2nd touch, and I've not been able to duplicate the error by adjusting probe speeds, clearance plane or other variables.

This has happened 3 or 4 times and smashed my probe stylus up in to the probe body. My probe stylus is a stainless rod press fit in a delrin collar, so I was able to tap it back out and re-center/verify everything was OK, but I've stopped using the Auto Zero function as I'm tired of rebuilding my probe.

Hadn't mentioned it until now as I figured it was something I was doing wrong, but maybe not now.
